There has never been a more interesting and exciting time to be a regeneration, project or commercial lawyer at Wirral Council. We are busy expanding our team of lawyers, to provide us with the right mix of people and skills to respond to the innovation, improvement and growth around us and provide an excellent legal service to the Council and our communities.
In order to achieve our objectives we are looking for a Principal Lawyer (Contracts and Commercial). This is an exciting role that will direct, lead and manage the provision of high quality, professional legal services within the Contracts and Commercial areas, ensuring the delivery of constructive legal and constitutional advice and assistance to Council, Committees/Panels, Elected Members and senior management across the organisation. The post holder will lead all aspects of Contracts and Commercial legal services, including high value, high profile, complex litigation matters in all areas of this field, ensuring the Councils objectives are at the heart of the service. A key focus will be to support the success of large-scale regeneration activity and economic growth ambitions for Wirral.
The post holder will lead and manage the teams responsible for the delivery of contracts and commercial legal advice to the organisation. A key focus will be to provide high quality, constructive legal, constitutional and procedural advice and assistance to Council, Council Committees/Panels, Elected Members and senior management, ensuring legal problems and challenges are solved effectively and efficiently. The Principal Lawyer role will further build effective working relationships with relevant clients and stakeholders to deliver an efficient, effective and customer-centric approach to dealing with all legal matters related to contracts and commercial across the business. In turn this will foster a high performing culture within the service, ensuring a customer focussed approach and a drive for continuous improvement, best practice and value for money.
We are looking for someone with strong leadership and relationship management skills, with a passion and drive to deliver results consistently and provide high standards of customer care. You will be a qualified and practising barrister, solicitor, legal executive (Fellow) or equivalent (subject to or awaiting QLTS). As per Law Society, you will also have at least 3 years post qualification. You will demonstrate sound knowledge, awareness and application of ethical, professional and capability standards and requirements. You will also have experience of dealing with complex matters within relevant areas of law, having provided advice, guidance, and support in a wide variety of cases.
The successful candidate will have a positive, 'can-do' style of working whilst having the confidence to challenge the status quo and show tact, diplomacy, empathy and political awareness with resilience, especially in dealing with competing and demanding pressures and potentially emotionally difficult situations and information. Ultimately, you will demonstrate a commitment and enthusiasm to making a difference for residents, you will role model our values and will be an ambassador for the Council.
