Weightmans go to press following launch of LLG's Member Defence Scheme
Weightmans launches defence scheme with Lawyers in Local Government
Top 45 Law Firm Weightmans has launched a Monitoring Officer Defence Scheme in partnership with Lawyers in Local Government (LLG).
The scheme will add benefit to LLG members, appealing to monitoring officers or their deputies when providing advice and assistance. The scheme offers members a telephone advice line, a conference meeting and preferential terms in tribunal proceedings, and will run under the experienced lead of Simon Goacher, Partner and Head of Local Government at Weightmans.
"We are delighted to be partnering with LLG on the Monitoring Defence Scheme. We will be offering advice and support to monitoring officers and their deputies under the scheme. The role of the monitoring officer is crucial to ensuring the effective governance of local authorities. The combination of the effects of the budget cuts, ever more pressure on authorities to adopt innovative arrangements for delivering services and achieving growth and a trend of downgrading the role of monitoring officer often makes it a very difficult and pressurised one to fulfil. This initiative from LLG enables monitoring officers to obtain quick access to external advice and builds upon our existing strong relationship with LLG and local authorities."
Prior to joining Weightmans, Simon spent nearly two decades practising local government law. His roles included Head of Legal Services and Monitoring Officer at Wirral Council and Cheshire West and Chester Council.
LLG was formed in April 2013 by the merger of the Association of Council Secretaries and Solicitors (ACSeS) and Solicitors in Local Government (SLG).
